Maine, one of the New England states of US, is a fabulous gateway location. Beautiful cliff side ocean drives, stunning sunrises & sunsets, woodlands, mountains and amazing wildlife viewing opportunities await you, shares Suchi.
While Rishi Menon lets his photographs talk, Suchi excitedly continues – We even saw a couple of moose crossing the road. Depending on the season, you can also do whale & puffin watching cruises. In fact certain months you can see the whales even from the shore. And not to forget the numerous antique stores & local artists galleries. We picked up quite a few stuff to decorate our little girl’s nursery & artifacts for our home. Here are few must do and visit places in Maine……
1. Spring Point Ledge Light in South Portland, Maine was built in 1897. Portland is a quaint city with beautiful houses, bed & breakfasts, waterfront streets and restaurants. We stayed in a bed and breakfast called Pomegranate Inn and every morning they served a gourmet breakfast.

2. Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Completed in 1791, it is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine. Maine has several scenic drives and one route which takes you through coastal towns and several lighthouses is the Historic Route 1. But always add few hours when planning the itinerary since the speed limit is very low when you reach the towns.

3. When in Maine, one definitely ought to try lobsters. We tried lobsters rolls and lobster sushi rolls and both were out of this world!

4. The acclaimed horror & suspense writer Stephen King lives in Bangor with his wife. We drove past his house and Rishi who is a big fan could not help but stop and take a picture of his beautiful blood red color house π Maine also has US President George H. W Bush’s childhood home. It’s called ‘The Bush compound’ and its located in Kennebunkport.

5. This is Mount Hope cemetery in Bangor. It is the second oldest garden cemetery in the United states. Stephen King’s Pet Sematary movie was filmed there. It was very peaceful to walk around here. Bangor was part of the northern Maine scenic drive that took us through several lakes and forests.

6. The town of Lubec in Maine is the easternmost town in the contiguous United States that borders Canada. A small town with a lighthouse called West Quoddy Head Light, it claims to be the first location in the United States to see the sunrise. If you have Canadian visa you can make a day trip & go across the border to Campobello Island where you can tour the Roosevelt Campobello International Park and learn the history of the Roosevelts. You can also visit Mulholland Point Lighthouse which was built in 1885.
In Lubec, we stayed in the West Quoddy Head Light Keepers Cottage which was built in 1808. It was an awesome experience! Maine’s most popular dessert is their wild blueberry pie & we had that in a restaurant in Lubec!
